Migrant District Coordinator/Advocate

BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for implementing migrant program by providing advocacy in the area of academics, monitoring and career assistance; supporting the success of students and assisting with personal and social needs; assist in the identification of eligible migrant students; maintain records and perform clerical accounting duties to include budgetary control.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Provide or facilitate supportive services to migrant children or to their families as necessary
  • Apply and explain federal regulations pertaining to the migrant education program
  • Act as a liaison between students, counselors, and teachers
  • Strategizes with school district staff regarding identification, recruitment, and migrant student needs
  • Conducts home, work or school site visits to identify student needs and make appropriate referrals for services
  • Assists with recruitment duties by identifying potential eligible students to ensure meeting established program goals
  • Operate a centralized system to include the input of records received for statistical purposes
  • Maintain and update migrant student records, reports, documents and files as directed, distributes this information to program coordinator and other appropriate personnel
  • Post, balance and adjust accounts as needed
  • Perform related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Federal regulations pertaining to the migrant education program
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Public speaking techniques
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Target communities and cultures
  • Basic accounting practices and procedures
  • Compile and maintain accurate and complete records and reports
  • Budgetary control

ABILITY TO:

  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Maintain current knowledge of programs rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions
  • Perform routine clerical accounting duties
  • Maintain accurate financial and statistical records and compile data
  • Prepare data processing input documents rapidly and accurately
  • Read, write, translate and interpret English and a designated second language ** Preferred
  • Meet schedules and timelines

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D as required by law and one year experience working in a migrant department or working with multicultural clientele.
