Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (hours may vary)

Starting Rate: $35,322.60 annually

Eligibility Requirements: Open to All Applicants

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft complaints, motions, notices and other pleadings for review by staff attorney(s)
  • Prepare complaints, motions, notices, body attachment forms, drivers' license suspension forms and other legal documents and pleading necessary for prosecution of City's code enforcement
  • Review administrative court referrals and tickets to ensure that correct parties are cited public works, corporation counsel and the hearing officers for hearings.
  • Perform specialized research as needed using Westlaw or other available sources
  • Update indexed for paid and canceled liens and judgements
  • After court hearings and trials, perform follow up tasks such as mailing copies of legal documents to defendant and contracting City departments
  • Serve as contact person for Code Hearing Officers, City administrators, etc.

Required Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to a four-year college degree or certificate in Paralegal Studies or Public Administration. Proficiency in personal computer use, Microsoft Office, Westlaw, and internet research is essential. A valid driver's license is required. The candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work courteously and tactfully with others, prioritize multiple projects under time constraints, and maintain strict confidentiality. Advanced knowledge of legal terminology, principles, and procedures-particularly in municipal, state, and federal law-is necessary, along with the ability to represent the City's Legal Department in a professional and effective manner.

Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.

To be eligible to apply, current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position.
