General Responsibility:
Serve as an attorney for SLED working under the direction of SLED's Office of General Counsel. Perform all necessary and assigned legal tasks and responsibilities to represent and support SLED and the SLED Chief.

Specific Duties:
  • Provide legal representation and guidance to SLED personnel on the application of state and federal law, state and federal regulations, and SLED policies and procedures. Prosecute SLED cases in summary courts throughout the state, when needed.
  • Perform professional legal research into criminal justice issues and prepare legal analysis, responses, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents as needed to assist and guide SLED and SLED personnel. Collaborate with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and prosecutors as needed.
  • Assist SLED personnel with privilege reviews; extradition matters; compliance with South Carolina FOIA; and discovery productions, including electronic discovery in both criminal and civil matters.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested or assigned by SLED's General Counsel.
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Ten (10) years of legal experience.
  • Must be a member of the South Carolina bar.
  • Must have completed Rule 403 trial experiences.
  • Must possess excellent writing and communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Must possess the ability to provide competent legal guidance and advice on the application of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies that affect SLED and SLED personnel.
  • Position requires the ability to be on-call and to work off hours for special projects and details.
  • Must reside in or be willing to relocate to within a 50-mile radius from SLED Headquarters located at 4400 Broad River Road in Columbia, SC.
  • Prior prosecutorial experience.
  • Prior representation of law enforcement in civil matters.
  • Experience with e-discovery.
