Staff Attorney- The Farmworker Program
Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) seeks a bilingual preferred (Spanish/English) attorney for its Farmworker Program. We are hiring for two positions:
Full-time, hard-funded position focused on serving clients in Eastern Oregon with required periodic travel to the region.
Limited duration contract Attorney (12mo contract, dates July/August 2026-July/August 2027).
Either position may be based out of our Forest Grove, Salem, or Pendleton offices, and are eligible for a partial remote work option.
The Farmworker Program represents migrant and seasonal farm, nursery, and forestry workers primarily in employment, housing, health and safety, unemployment benefits, and civil rights cases.
Background
LASO is a non-profitanization that represents low-ie clients in civil cases. LASO's eight regional offices serve the general low-ie population throughout the state, and two specialized statewide programs provide services to farmworkers and representation on Native American issues. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services programmitted to advocacy strategies with the broadest possible impact on clientmunity problems. LASO is actively working to build an inclusiveanizational culture that centers on racial equity. We aremitted to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce and providing a weing and culturally responsive environment for our staff and clients.
The Farmworker Program consists of ten staff, including attorneys and paralegal/outreach workers. Most of our clients speak Spanish and/or one of the Mesoamerican indigenous languages such as Mixteco. We emphasize areas of the law thatmunity members tell us are most important to them and where representation and advocacy can achieve long term change. We work together with our clients to ovee the challenges they face including systemic racism, unpaid wages, poor working conditions, unsafe housing, and other forms of discrimination and retaliation for the exercise of their legal rights. We use strategies includingmunity education, legal representation, and systemic advocacy.
Responsibilities
Both staff attorneys will work with our team to represent agricultural workers in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies. The caseload, involving abination of impact litigation and brief service cases, consists primarily of employment, housing, health and safety, civil rights, unemployment and tax cases. The staff attorney will also be involved in non-litigation advocacy,munity education and outreach to agricultural workers andmunity-based groups.
Preferred Qualifications
We seek applicants who have:
Membership in the Oregon bar, eligibility for reciprocity, or a willingness to take the next bar exam;
Ability tomunicate legal concepts clearly and work collaboratively with clients and colleagues from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds;
Ability tomunicate with clients in Spanish is highly preferred; full fluency is not required, and applicants with developing Spanish skills are encouraged to apply;
Interest or experience in litigation and/or employment law;
A high degree of initiative and the ability to take ownership of work while coordinating closely with colleagues;
A valid driver's license and willingness to engage in occasional travel (including travel to Eastern Oregon, as applicable).
Proven interest in andmitment to advocacy for low-iemunities and other vulnerable populations;
Demonstrated understanding andmitment to anti-bias principles, cultural knowledge, cultural humility, and addressing systemic racism and other forms of oppression; and
Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed to meet client needs.
Salary/Benefits
Compensation is based on a 35-hour work week. Salary range is $66,200 - 73,700 for 0-5 years' experience; $75,200 - 81,200 for 6-10 years' experience; and $82,700 - $105,200 for 11-30 years' experience annually; salaries are determined by relevant work experience and our Collective Bargaining Agreement. An additional $4,300 to $5,700 annually is available to bilingual staff, depending on proficiency. In addition, LASO offers a full benefits package including individual and family health, vision, and dental insurance; a 6% employer retirement contribution; generous paid holidays, vacation, and health leave; and paid moving expenses.
We are currently in a collective bargaining year, withpensation and benefits under active review. Any improvements will be applied in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
