About the Role
Stay Housed L.A is acollaborative initiativebetween Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles and localmunity-basedanizationsand legal service providers.The partnership aimsto implementa county-wideRight toCounsel program, ensuring that tenantsacrossLos Angeles Countyhave access tolegal information,resources and, whenappropriate (eligible), legalrepresentation in court eviction proceedings.
TheLitigationAssociate Supervising Attorneyplays a key leadership role on NLSLA's eviction defense team, overseeing and developingattorneys and legal fellows. The ideal candidate will be an experienced litigator with a strongmitment to anti-poverty work,capable of leadinglegaladvocacy in a high volume and fast-paced environment.
In this role, you would report to the Supervising Attorney. This position is exempt.
What You'll Do
Supervise, train, and mentor attorneys andlegal fellows.
Support,guide,andevaluateprofessional development of staff.
Oversee case management, review substantive casework,apanynew advocates to courthearings,and back up advocates and volunteers at our weekly housing clinics.
Provide direct representation to tenants in unlawful detainer matters, as needed to support program operations.
Serve as a member of the NLSLA Leadership Team.
This position is designated as hybrid. Employees arerequiredto work on-site a minimum of two (2) days per week, with the remaining time eligible for remote work as business needs allow. Specific in-office days may be set by your supervisor to support team collaboration andanizational priorities.
Travel to NLSLA program offices, courthouses, and other locations throughout Los Angeles County will be required.
What You'll Need
A JD from an accredited law school and active California State Bar license.
A minimum of three (3) years of litigation experience, from intake through trial. Jury trial experience preferred.
Prior experience with unlawful detainer litigation and housing law preferred.
Stronganizational skills and the ability to proactively managepeting priorities and deadlines.
Passion for NLSLA mission and demonstratedmitment to advocating for the legal rights of low-ie individuals.
Passion, empathy, andpassion for supporting people from different lived experiences.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, businessmunication platforms, and web-based case management platforms.
Bonus Points
Havepreviousexperience working in a legal aid or public interest law firm.
Are bilingual in Spanish, due to the high number of Spanish-speaking residents in themunity, or in any of the other Los Angeles threshold languages, which is highly valued in ourmunity outreach efforts.
