Job summary

MLT Aikins is looking for an experienced collections paralegal to join the team and work within our busy litigation practice. The Collections Paralegal is responsible for providing practice management and administrative support as part of a team of lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants performing BC-based debt recovery litigation work within a broader litigation practice. As a growing and dynamic firm, we are eager to hear from qualified applicants interested in joining our high-performing and collaborative team.

We are also looking for that candidate who has the ability to work independently, has excellent attention to detail, displays sound judgement rooted in tangible collections experience, can follow instructions with minimal supervision and who thrives in a fast-paced, professional team environment, while providing superior service to our clients.

Hybrid remote work is available for this position following completion of the probationary period.

Responsibilities include:

Using a business-minded approach to assess files for suit worthiness and likelihood of collection to align individual and team recovery efforts with collection potential

Collaborating with, and preparing recommendations for, responsible lawyers on next steps on files

Communicating with the team lead, lawyers, legal assistants, and paralegal peers to coordinate workflow and triage priority deliverables

Managing and calendaring a large number of collection deadlines

Maintaining an efficient and always current digital file system and matter status information in the firm and client portals, utilizing strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail

Engaging the service of third-party vendors to assist with searches and service of documents

Communicating regularly with clients about the actions taken on debtor files

Making settlement and payment arrangements with debtors and their legal counsel

Initiating correspondence to debtors to encourage payment of delinquent accounts

Conferring with debtors by telephone in attempt to determine reason for overdue payment, reviewing terms of sales, service or credit contract with client

Drafting and assembling legal correspondence and documents and filing documents with the Court

Consistently recording time in alignment with the timekeeping practices required for the assigned portfolio

Working in partnership with the team lead and peers to drive continuous improvement and efficiency in the assigned portfolio

Contributing to the mentorship and development of peers and engaging in individual development activities to consistently deliver legal service excellence

Qualifications include:

Graduate of a recognized paralegal program or equivalent

Minimum of five years of paralegal experience in a BC-based litigation practice; experience in foreclosure or debt recovery litigation work is an asset

Advanced understanding of litigation process and court rules and procedures

Advanced computer skills including Adobe, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, legal timekeeping software and document management software

Ability to use online resources such as Collect Link, Techcom and Litigation Highway

Strong interpersonal skills and excitement to work in a dynamic, team-based environment
