The Health System encompasses four highly regarded hospitals - Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, a Campus of Duke University Hospital, and Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital - along with physician practices including Duke Health Integrated Practice, Duke Primary Care, specialty clinics, Duke Home Care & Hospice, and various support services at locations across North Carolina. DUHS is undergoing an exciting period of transformation, with a significant growth agenda, and is presently advancing plans to open two additional locations.

Overview:
Duke University seeks a Chief Counsel Health System to oversee all legal matters for the Duke University Health System, and to serve as the primary legal advisor to DUHSs Chief Executive Officer, senior leadership, and its Board of Directors. In addition to being an exceptional practitioner, the successful candidate will exercise excellent judgment in guiding DUHSs senior leadership team through complex and rapidly evolving legal and business issues while thoughtfully balancing the broader interests of DUHS and those it serves. The Chief Counsel will bring a practical, solutionoriented mindset that weighs legal risk alongside business objectives and considers competitive dynamics in the broader healthcare context. This role requires strong business acumen, including the ability to understand operational, financial, and strategic matters and to provide counsel that enables informed decisionmaking and sustainable organizational growth.

Experience:
The successful candidate will be an exceptional leader and manager with at least 15-20+ years of broad-based experience in healthcare law gained at a law firm and/or in the public sector, and in an executive level in-house role at an academic medical center, hospital, health system, or healthcare organization. Candidates with significant experience as a General Counsel, Chief Counsel, or Deputy General Counsel of a highly regarded academic medical center or a large prominent health system, hospital, or healthcare organization are strongly preferred.
