Job Summary
This position will provide advice and counsel to the Company on legal matters relating to litigation, safety, regulatory settlements, field questions, and Attorney General investigations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develops, prepares, and implements litigation strategy for lawsuits against the Company including case strategy, responsive evidence, risk assessment, budget approval, and settlement authority recommendations. This function coordinates all aspects of the litigation process with internal stakeholders, claims adjusters, and outside counsel to ensure optimal legal outcomes and cost-effective resolution.
Provides legal advice and guidance on safety compliance matters, regulatory settlements, and Attorney General investigations, ensuring the company maintains adherence to applicable laws and regulations while minimizing legal risk and liability.
Responds to legal inquiries from field operations, offering timely counsel on day-to-day legal issues, operational concerns, and risk management strategies to support business objectives.
Manages legal matters related to incidents and claims, including coordinating responses, conducting legal analysis, liaising with outside counsel when necessary, and developing strategies to resolve disputes efficiently. Establish and maintain effective communication with outside counsel and insurance carriers to facilitate smooth claims reporting, coverage analysis, and payment of defense and settlement.
Make outside counsel more effective and more efficient by serving as the Company's in-house expert for litigating insured claims.
Prepare, review, and/or coordinate discovery responses with Company employees and outside counsel.
Serve as the Company's corporate representative at selected hearings, arbitrations, and/or trials.
Interprets changes in relevant laws and regulations affecting the energy industry, providing proactive guidance to internal stakeholders on compliance obligations and potential business impacts.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Exceptional analytical skills, integrity, and judgment regarding both legal and business issues.
Excellent negotiating, drafting, issue spotting, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support senior management and operations personnel, and ability to effectively collaborate with others.
Detail-orientation and ability to manage a portfolio of litigation and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced and high-output environment.
Strong work ethic, personal accountability and initiative and results driven
Some domestic travel is required.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor Law
4+ years litigation experience
Member of a state bar (preferably Pennsylvania) in good standing.
Significant experience as a practicing litigation attorney, preferably with a national law firm and/or global company
