Summer Associate - Habitat Improvement Fellow
Great Peninsula Conservancy (GPC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit land trust dedicated to protecting the natural habitats, rural landscapes, and open spaces of the Great Peninsula region of West Puget Sound, Washington. GPC's important work is accomplished through conservation, stewardship, and community engagement. GPC's Land Labs Program provides students from Title I schools with hands-on conservation education. The program promotes academic engagement through outdoor learning and introduces students to a wide variety of STEM professions with family sustaining salaries. In this way, Land Labs supports AmeriCorps VISTA's poverty alleviating mission. Land Labs lessons take place in outdoor classrooms where youth learn about ecological land management, restoration, conservation science, and career opportunities in these fields. Member Duties : The Summer Associate will educate volunteers about environmental stewardship with the goal that volunteers apply their knowledge in improving outdoor classrooms for the Land Labs Program. Land Labs is a poverty-alleviating outdoor education program that provides field trips to 5th-12th grade students from low-income communities with the goal of opening students' eyes to science careers with family sustaining salaries. The Summer Associate will train volunteers in restoration science and provide guidance on how to lead service-learning habitat improvement projects in outdoor classrooms. In doing so, the volunteers will receive a meaningful introduction to new professional skills in the environmental field that can serve as pathways out of poverty while also supporting GPC's year-long VISTA project, Land Labs. The Associate will track the number of volunteers receiving education or training in environmental stewardship and the number of individuals reporting a behavior change.
