Position Summary

Works under direct supervision to prepare the judges for each Friday's motion docket.

Pay Grade: 41H

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; AND
  • Enrolled in an accredited law school as at least a third-year law student.
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares a spreadsheet of the motions indicating the nature of the motion and the attorneys on both sides.
  • Meets with the Judge each week to discuss the upcoming motion docket for the division and get any special assignments related to upcoming motions.
  • Review all documents related to the motions, research the issues, and prepare briefs if needed.
  • Contacts attorneys and self-represented litigants with questions and with instructions for their court appearance.
  • Meets with the Judge and courtroom clerk to discuss any strikes or updates.
  • Conducts additional research as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as required or directed.

KSAs

  • Excellent writing and research skills.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and Westlaw.

Shelby County Resident Disclaimer

All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment. The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees. This means exemption from this policy is in effect for the following departments and positions: (1) Sheriff Deputy Patrol Officers, Deputy Jailers and Dispatchers, employed by the Sheriff Department, (2) Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections, (3) Firefighters, Paramedics and Dispatchers employed by the Shelby County Fire Department.
