The Law Clerk (Criminal) is a part-time, non-benefited position working in the City Attorneys Office under the direct supervision of the Prosecution Division. This fellowship is specifically designed for a law student (3L) or recent graduate to gain intensive, hands-on experience in the criminal justice system. This positon will focus exclusively on the research, preparation, and litigation of criminal misdemeanor and infraction cases, bridging the gap between classroom theory and courtroom practice.Minimum QualificationsEducation: Currently enrolled as a 2L or 3L student in an ABA-accredited law school.Rule 14-807 Eligibility: Must meet all requirements for the Utah Supreme Courts Law Student Practice Rule.Note: This requires completion of at least four (4) semesters and current or prior enrollment in Evidence and Criminal Procedure.Availability: Must be able to commit to the specific 4-month term (Jan-Apr, May-Aug, or Sept-Dec) for a minimum of 20 hours per week, and a maximum of 28 hours per week.Legal Research: Proficiency in Westlaw or Lexis+ for statutory and case law research.Litigation & EvidenceFoundational Knowledge: Solid understanding of the Utah Rules of Evidence and Rules of Criminal Procedure, specifically regarding Class B and C misdemeanors.Digital Literacy: Ability to review and synthesize high volumes of digital evidence, including Body-Worn Camera (BWC) footage and digital discovery platforms (e.g., Evidence.com).Drafting: Ability to draft clear, concise legal memoranda and basic criminal motions (e.g., Motions in Limine or Oppositions to Suppress).Negotiation & Mediation: Strong interpersonal skills; must be able to remain firm yet professional when communicating with pro se defendants or defense counsel.Preferred QualificationsCareer Interest: Expressed interest in public service, criminal prosecution, or local government law.Prior Experience: Previous internship or clerkship with a prosecutors office, public defenders office, or judicial chambers.Trial Advocacy: Participation in Law School Moot Court or Mock Trial teams.Professional & Ethical RequirementsEthical Standards: Must demonstrate an impeccable understanding of the Utah Rules of Professional Conduct, particularly Rule 3.8 (Special Responsibilities of a Prosecutor).Background Check: Must pass a background check sufficient to be cleared for access to UCJIS/BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) sensitive data.Professionalism: Ability to maintain a courtroom-ready appearance and demeanor at all times when representing the City.$27.00 HourlyThis is a time-limited, non-benefited, part-time position specifically for the May August 2026 term.
