Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to perform legal research and prepare legal documents.

Salary: $57,259.00 per-year

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs legal research as required; makes use of legal research tools; evaluates case law and statutes; reviews and analyzes case files, motions, and briefs; observes court proceedings and testimony; reads trial transcripts and examines court exhibits.
  • Prepares, types and edits Opinions, Order of Court, and other legal documents; discusses research findings and results with the Judge.
  • Assists Judge as required in such areas as indigency determinations, Argument Court, Pre-trial conferences, trial lists with attorneys, weekly motions court etc.
  • Discusses confidential issues with the Judge.
  • Assists in the performance of courtroom and judicial chambers duties as needed.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Graduate of an accredited Law School with License to practice law in Pennsylvania or a commitment to sit for the Bar Examination in the State of Pennsylvania at the next available opportunity. Required by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to obtain twelve hours of Continuing Legal Education credits annually in order to maintain a license to practice in Pennsylvania.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including personal computer, photocopier, telephone, facsimile machine, etc.
  • Ability to use Word processing and email software.

Mathematical Ability

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and calculate decimals and percents.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communications

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including case files, motions, briefs, judicial calendars, Federal and State statutes, case law, rules and regulations, legal references, etc.
  • Ability to prepare a variety of documents including Opinions, Orders of Court, counsel lists, memoranda, etc. using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of legal writing and citation, punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow instructions.
  • Ability to use and interpret legal terminology.
  • Ability to conduct legal research using both traditional and automated database research methodology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Judges, judicial staff, litigants, attorneys, Court Administration staff, Law Librarian, Prothonotary, Clerk of Courts, Register of Wills, Information Systems personnel, and others orally and in writing.

Environmental Adaptability

  • Ability to work effectively in an office and courtroom environment.
  • Pursuant to Pennsylvania Supreme Court Order Number 438 of 2014, in courts that have no formally established divisions or sections, attorneys are prohibited (except as to pro se matters) from appearing as counsel in the court itself.
