INVISTA is currently seeking a business-focused Trademark Attorney to provide counsel and support to all of INVISTA’s businesses. A critical success factor for this position is the ability to synthesize multiple complex concepts from interactions with the marketing, communications and management staff into meaningful action items for business leadership. The successful candidate must be a self-starter, possess the ability to quickly adapt to changes in the business, and must demonstrate a strong work ethic. Once established in the role, the incumbent will supervise a staff of two in-house trademark professionals and outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of trademark applications, trademark clearance searches, work related to opposition proceedings, work related to cancellation proceedings and work related to other conflict matters worldwide, including litigation. The incumbent will also be responsible for managing a global trademark portfolio in excess of 6,000 active registrations and pending applications and a domain name portfolio that exceeds 600 registrations. In addition, the incumbent will provide trademark related legal counsel to senior marketing, brand and commercial leaders in all of INVISTA’s businesses units and assist INVISTA’s licensing counsel with trademark licensing matters. Such counsel will include providing strategic trademark and brand related legal guidance to the business units, which will align with business strategies and visions to drive value creation. Relying on excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the successful candidate will be expected to provide these legal services with limited supervision and oversight. INVISTA is looking for an applicant with at least one major area of expertise that the rest of the legal organization may rely upon. The position will report to the chief counsel, intellectual property and will be responsible for annually setting the company’s external trademark legal budget. A significant portion of the incumbent’s time (approximately 50%) will be spent on trademark and domain name enforcement efforts. The candidate will be expected to develop and manage a cost effective and systematic approach to global trademark and domain name enforcement that maximizes brand awareness, strengthens INVISTA’s brand positions globally and has the effect of reducing infringing conduct overall from year to year. Experience & Skills Required: • 4 + years of trademark preparation and prosecution experience at a major corporation and/or law firm • Law degree from an ABA (American Bar Association) accredited law school • Licensed to practice law in at least one state • Experience working with and/or managing foreign trademark agents • Experience translating complex IP issues (orally and in writing) into easily understandable terms for internal customers and senior management. • Ability to travel 5-10%, both domestically and internationally. Education & Experience:   - Must possess a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree and be a member in good standing of the state bar of Kansas. - Must have five years of experience in, or providing service to, health-related clientele. - The position requires a general corporate background including an understanding of corporate, governance, finance and contract law. A thorough knowledge and experience in all aspects of the health law practice, including professional liability, hospital operations, referral restrictions and restrictions on the activities of tax exempt organizations. - Must possess highly effective communication skills with the ability to relate effectively with internal and external constituencies, and must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
