Responsibilities of paralegals, also known as a legal assistants, include assisting attorneys and lawyers with a number of daily activities. They perform any number of tasks delegated by attorneys, and undergo training in order to gain extensive experience for success in their career. They must have a thorough knowledge of laws and procedures to best assist their superiors. Paralegals and legal assistants must be flexible and have the ability to multitask.
Law Office Manager
Responsible for a number of administrative activities, law office managers handle duties including basic administrative duties and filling in for a paralegal in their absence. They ensure a smooth operation by maintaining files, software systems, and necessary documents within legal offices and firms. They also keep an inventory of needed materials, and ensure proper maintenance to office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, printers, scanners, and telephones. Office managers must have a knowledge of a number of practices to sustain overall efficiency.
Legal Secretary
Duties for legal secretaries are often varied, but may include typing, scheduling, filing, corresponding, or answering telephones. They perform basic duties integral to attorney success, and may come into contact with confidential materials. Experienced professionals are preferred, but these positions often allow advancement to paralegal or legal assistant careers.
